The Korean Institute of Criminology (K.I.C.)was established in 1989 to conduct scientific analysis of criminal issues and assist in developing and formulating criminal justice policies. The Institute assists in policy formulation by analyzing the current state of crime phenomena in response to changing crime rates; conducts scientific and comprehensive studies for development of criminal justice policies; and contributes to public education through publication and dissemination of the results of research projects.

The Institute's major activities include the study of criminal trends, causes and countermeasures and criminal law and policy; conducting joint studies on criminal justice policies with other Korean and foreign research institutes; providing research grants to experts and research organizations; conducting research projects requested by the government as well as private organizations; educating the public about criminal justice issues; and promoting international exchange and cooperation for prevention of crime.
