The primary purpose of the ASC is to bring together criminologists and those involved in criminal justice to foster training and research on a national and an international basis and to articulate scientific knowledge in print. The Society's objective is to bring together a multidisciplinary forum fostering criminological study, research, and education that focuses on the etiology, prevention, control and treatment of crime and delinquency, and to generally advance the professional interests of the field of criminology.
The 3,500 members are primarily university faculty (70%), studens (20%), and public and private research entities (10%) who engage in social and behavioral science based criminological research. At this time, 70% are male and 80% white. Approximately 36 countries are represented by over 400 members and the rest are US citizens.
The ASC, as an NGO, has been represented at ISPAC (December 2002), Crime Commission meeting in Vienna (May, 2003), and the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in New York throughout 2002 and 2003.
